How do we work?

The Invisible Study Hall helps disadvantaged children, primarily of Roma origin, in the VIII. district of Budapest.

In the Study Hall we believe that children who apply to us should start their education in a primary school that offers them good chances for their future, but it is also crucially important that their school progression should be supported by services that aim to mitigate the effects of a disadvantaged background. The reason for this is that in Hungary the family background index, showing the correlation between a child’s educational achievements and their family background, is one of the highest in the world, meaning that the Hungarian educational system is inadequate to mitigate the effects of students’ disadvantaged family background. Thus our programs have to incorporate services that mitigate such shortcomings of the educational system. We do this by maintaining a system of voluntary mentorship, we hold regular weekly workshops, individual development sessions, and organise at least one monthly cultural or leisure activity. Our aim is to help the children live up to their fullest potential, increase their cultural and social capital and enjoy the stability of belonging to a supportive community.
